#7 How To Deal With ‘What Others Might Think Of You’ When You’re Stepping Outside The Box

7 Reasons Why Becoming A Location Independent Or Digital Nomad Family Is A Great Idea!

I think when most people think of digital nomads or location independents, they think of the young free and single twenty-somethings. Who caught the first wave of digital marketing and freelancing opportunities and then island-hopped for months or years on end making money from their laptops. Driving us all insane with their endless beach photos. But there is no reason why that can’t be you too. ‘Are you insane?’ I hear you ask. ‘With kids?-No way.’

Well, I am here to tell you it IS possible.

We are so programmed to think that when we have kids “life is over”. Your life does change, yes, it will never be completely the same. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be better than before, and it certainly doesn’t mean that you have to be limited to one location. There may be some hurdles you will have to overcome. The biggest challenge is the idea of what is normal, what you ‘should’ be doing as a parent, and what society dictates to us doesn’t have to be the only answer. Once you can accept that, everything is possible.

Let’s look at 7 of the reasons why becoming a location independent or even a digital nomad family truly is an excellent idea. **YAY, insert happy dance!**

Many of the main benefits are the same as if you were a single person, but having a child or children along for the ride adds an extra element.

Reason 1: Freedom

We live in a society where we are so constricted by ideas and social norms, freedom is so hard to come by. Once you break away, freedom is endless. (Ooohh I love that feeling!) Not only the freedom of where to go from one week or month to the next, or every few months, or even year. But how to bring your children up, how to educate them. How you make a living.  As simple as what you wear every day, the choice is yours and the options are endless.

If you decide you want to work outside for a few hours with the kids playing in a pool or on a farm as the kids run around with the animals, you can. Wherever you can connect to WIFI you can work, and the world is your child’s playground. You can join this playground whenever your work is done because the most important time is family time. Which brings me to the next reason.

Reason 2: Quality time together

This is the big one. By the time I was pregnant with Sophia, I couldn’t imagine being apart from her for long hours at a time, and neither could my ‘hubby.’ It became a priority to optimize our time.

When you are on the road or living in your chosen location you can make every day work for you. Splitting your day up between yourself and your partner, so one works whilst the other hangs out with the kids in the morning, and then family time in the afternoon for example. Or if you are alone take advantage of local childcare services for a few hours. You can choose your working hours. If that means deciding to spend all day together as a family and working in the evening sometimes when the kids are asleep, or working for a few hours in the day, you make the schedule.

You cannot put a price on spending time together as a family. Being able to choose the hours you work, and when you put the laptop away, there is no commute; your child is right there to play with. They grow up so quickly, spending time together while you can is such a blessing. Life is too short.

Reason 3: The world is your oyster

The world really is such an incredible place full of adventure and new experiences. When we live in one place, the world becomes boring and predictable. We live the same day over and over. When you are on the road, you can choose your adventure. You can wake up every day and decide if this is the reality you want to stay in or if you want to move forward. You can explore the beach outside your door, play ball, go for a hike in a mountain valley, or check out some museums in a new cosmopolitan city. The adventure never has to end. There is no reason why this can’t be your new norm.

Reason 4: Your children come first

Working a normal 9-5 it can be so hard to create a healthy work/life balance. With a job come commitments and fixed working hours. Once you have children the balance can be even harder to achieve. If your child gets sick, or there is a school commitment quite often you cannot even be there for them. Being a location independent family means that your children come first when it comes to work you can control your schedule.

Reason 5: Connecting with Other Cultures

If you have traveled before then you will know that one of the absolute highlights of going to new countries and exploring new destinations is one thing. But another amazing part about traveling is the people you meet along the way. Inspiring incredible people from all over the world. People from all races, religions, cultures, and backgrounds. Your children will have an opportunity to play with kids and connect with people from all over the world.

You will meet so many people with stories to tell you and something to teach you. The education you will receive, let alone your children is inspiring.

This incredible opportunity helps to form children who don’t see race or color, who understand different languages and history from a world perspective.  Shaping personalities that can empathize, relate, and understand other people on an international level.

Reason 6: Education is everywhere

Educating your children will depend on their age for sure. But there are so many different options nowadays. From homeschooling to unschooling, or settling for a year and enrolling your child, the possibilities are open. But the education they will receive on the road is priceless. Instead of seeing all those tropical birds in a book, they can see them in trees. They can learn languages from interacting with local kids. They can learn the history of the country you are in, and hear the local’s stories. There are also endless online recourses, and there will be even more available now after the 2020 pandemic.

Reason 7: Memories for a lifetime

Exposing your children to new cultures and life in different countries is an incredible gift. Allowing them to have a wide perspective of the world that will shape them and help form interesting and open-minded people. How magical that your children’s first memories could be exotic animals, not in a zoo but in the jungle or safari even. Instead of inside the confinement of nurseries’ four walls, out on the beach playing with their parents.

Imagine a life where you leave the 9-5 behind and focus on your family and your loved ones while exploring the world. Where you can live your dreams and best life, whilst spending time with your family.

Tell me, which of these reasons inspires you the most? Which idea makes you want to pack a bag and take your family with you?
